We all have our reasons to blog. Some of us blog because we want to build up a popular site and drive insane amounts of traffic to it and make money with adsense. Others just blog because we enjoy writing. Personally, I'm a bit of both. Through blogging, I've rediscovered writing and creative thinking. I also want to get this blog to as many people as possible so that I can share what I have learned and also make a bit of extra cash. In reality, there is also another added benefit to starting your own blog: Getting a better job
It is important to tell you guys that I'm not one of those guys that stays home all day and blogs his way to millions of dollars of Google Adsense revenue. In fact, my primary goal in life is not to quit my job and sit home and blog all day. I enjoy my job as a programmer and love the people I work with. However, if it ever came to the point where I would need to look for employment elsewhere, what could I do to further enhance my résumé or CV? As a professional, you need to market yourself as an expert in your field. You have knowledge that not too many other people have. Building a blog is a great way to get this knowledge into a tangible format. Think of your blog as the perfect offline storage solution for some of the knowledge that you carry around in your head. More than that, your blog is a great tool for giving future employers an idea of your expertise and your personality. It shows them that you are passionate about your field of work and that you are keen on sharing that knowledge with others. If your blog is really popular, a future employer might even already know about the blog's existance only to be pleasantly surprised that this new applicant in front of them is the one that runs it. I mean, depending on your field, it's not too far fetched to think that they might know about your blog ahead of time. Having a great blog on your CV can go along way towards establishing yourself as an expert in your field and in doing so, you might even be able to get a better salary as a result of it. Either way, this is all food for thought. If any of you have had success marketing yourself personally and professionally by using your blog, please let me know. I'd love to hear your success stories.
