I just recently saw a commercial for a website called GetMyFreeLaptop dot com. This is a common scam and you need to stay away from those kinds of offers.
There is no such thing as a free meal ladies and gentlemen. Here is how GetMyFreeLaptop works. The company behind GetMyFreeLaptop dot com basically tries to get you to signup for their service by promising you a free laptop computer. In order to get this supposed free laptop, you need to sign up for products and services from their sponsors. These products and services are usually automatically renewing subscriptions to services like Columbia House, BMG Music and others. Sometimes you even need to apply for credit cards and other financial services in order to qualify for the free laptop offer. So let's say that for argument's sake that you were able to complete every offer that was required for this promotion. You are now paying your money to a variety of products and services that you ordinarily wouldn't want. So where's your laptop then? Well, your work isn't over. Why? You need to have your friends and family sign up for the same offers you completed. Having granny apply for a credit card because you want a free laptop isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. Once again, let's assume that you got your mother, father, uncle and aunt to sign up for the offers from these sponsors. Each of you are now paying monthly charges for products and services you do not want. As an example, the total value of what you signed up for personally is about $45 a month. Multiply this amount by 5 because that is the amount of money that the sponsors are making off you and your family. That's $225 a month in new revenue for these sponsors. Obviously, GetMyFreeLaptop dot com is really happy with you and they will send you a free low-end laptop probably valued at around $300. You have to understand that GetMyFreeLaptop dot com is simply a middle man that is making commission off you for completing offers from their sponsors. You and your family are locked in to services that you can't get out of and you are making monthly payments for your new laptop indirectly. You have probably heard of people's problems with services like Columbia House (a sponsor of their's remember) where you can't end your contract for a year and have to pay them something like $15 a month for years and years. Let's assume that you have to spend a mimimum of 30$ a month to be eligible for GetMyFreeLaptop dot com's offer. Let's assume that you have to be signed up for at least 3 months of those services. And finally let's assume that you have to sign up 5 other people. That's 30 dollars / Month X 3 Months X 5 people = 450 dollars. That's the minimum payout. This means that before you get you laptop, $450 needs to go from your family to their sponsors. GetMyFreeLaptop dot com gives you a $300 laptop, the sponsors get their money, and GetMyFreeLaptop dot com keeps their commission. GetMyFreeLaptop dot com probably doesn't make a lot of money from this, so they need to do it over and over again, hence the reason they're advertising it on TV. In a nutshell, save you money and go buy the laptop yourself. It'll take longer, but you'll still have your family ;)
